Program
Day 1: Helsinki, Finland
The program starts in Helsinki, the capital of Finland and the beneficiary of some of Alvar Aalto’s greatest works of architecture. In addition to excellent examples of modern and contemporary architecture in this unique city, several excursions to other regions will originate here. Some examples of what you will see here: Otaniemi Chapel, Finlandia Hall, Helsinki Central Station and Arabia Factory.
Day 2: The Historic Province of Karelia, Finland
Along the Finnish-Russian border once existed the historic province of Karelia, with a culture that has been described as more purely “Finnish” than Western and Southern Finland, free of the “contaminating” influences of Scandinavian and Germanic cultures. This two-day trip will include a visit to the Juminkeko (the Center of Karelian Culture), the Metla (the Finnish Forest Research Institute), and, finally, Alvar Aalto’s Church of the Three Crosses, an excellent example of Aalto’s “White Period
Day 3: Jyväskylä, Finland
Jyväskylä is the largest city in the Finnish Lakeland region, an area characterized by its many lakes. The city contains some of the most important works of Alvar Aalto including Säynätsaki Town Hall and his Experimental House. In addition to these two works, the tour will include tours of three excellent examples of contemporary wood architecture, the spectacular Kuokkala Church, built with an arching laminated wood structure, Sibelius Hall, a wood structure wrapped in glass, and the nearby Piano Pavilion, a wooden pavilion perched on the water’s edge
Day 4: Noormarkku, Finland
Located in Noormarkku in central western Finland, the renowned Villa Mairea by Alvar Aalto is considered to be one of the greatest modernist homes in the world. It was here that Aalto revealed his skill and innovation in wood architecture.

Day 5: Stockholm, Sweden
After experiencing the Finnish culture, the programme will travel west into the heart of Scandinavia. Stockholm is considered the cultural heart of Sweden and is home to some of the most important works of Modern Scandinavian architecture, including the works of Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz.
Day 6: Oslo, Norway
From Stockholm, the programme will travel further east to Oslo, Norway to experience both the most ancient and cutting-edge in Scandinavian architecture, from the vernacular works on exhibit in the Norks Folkemuseum to the Oslo Opera House by internationally acclaimed architects Snǿhetta.
Day 7: Malmo, Sweden
Returning to Sweden and travelling south, the programme will stop in Malmo to experience additional masterpieces by Sigurd Lewerentz, one of the unsung heroes of late Modernism.
Day 8: Copenhagen, Denmark
Leaping across the Ǿresund, the programme will spend its last several days in the economic and cultural center of Copenhagen. In addition to meeting up with classmates attending the University of Copenhagen through the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS), you will have an opportunity to experience the flourishing Danish contemporary architecture movement
